Mental Health Social Worker Children's Defense Team

The Council for Children's Rights is seeking a Social Worker to join its Children's Defense Team.  The Social Worker will work directly with the Children's Defense Team Mental Health Attorney who represents children in locked psychiatric facilities in Mecklenburg County.  The Social Worker must complete tasks that align with the child's expressed interest and the child's case as directed by the assigned attorney.  To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume by January 23. 2018.  Absolutely no calls or emails please.


  • Work with the assigned attorney to represent the expressed interest of all children who are committed to a locked psychiatric facility.
  • Handle cases as distributed by the Director of Children's Defense.
  • Consult with the assigned attorney about community programs, placement, treatment, discharge planning, Medicaid, or educational issues.
  • Contact respite placements to determine availability.
  • Review and summarize client records.
  • Communicate with facility staff, treatment providers, the managed care organization, and other members of the child's team regarding the child's expressed interest.
  • Attend Child & Family Team meetings and court hearings to advocate and provide updates for the child-client.
  • Learn about new community programs that can benefit the child-clients.
  • Collaborate with professionals to advance cases and knowledge about community programs.
  • Maintain highly detailed notes and record keeping in the Council for Children's Rights database.
  • Be prompt and professional in all communications in and out of court.
  • Adhere to all Council for Children's Rights policies and procedures.
  • Assist, as needed, with grant related activities for the funding of this position.


  • Possess a Master of Social Work degree.
  • Three years of post-M.S.W. experience.
  • Substantial experience working with children that have a mental health diagnosis and/or have received mental health treatment.
  • Familiarity with the DSM-5.
  • Familiarity with Medicaid and Behavioral Health Services.
  • Familiarity with the Department of Social Services' Policies and Practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children of all ages.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage workloads with minimal supervision.
  • Highly professional.
