Organization Overview

Smart Start of Mecklenburg County (Smart Start or SSMC) is a Charlotte-based non-profit that funds local programs for children ages birth to five and their families. The organization is a catalyst for improving the lives of the 85,000+ young children in our community, with a focus on health, family, early education, and literacy. We mobilize resources and forge partnerships to support evidence-based policies, practices, and programs to ensure all children enter kindergarten healthy and ready to succeed.

Smart Start has a budget of over $30 million comprised of funding from the state of North Carolina, Mecklenburg County, and private donations and grants. SSMC funds approximately 25 programs annually serving over 25,000 young children and their families and administers Mecklenburg County's MECK Pre-K program, which provides free Pre-K to children in the community. SSMC also operates programs and campaigns internally, including Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, Guiding Parents to Services, and The Basics Mecklenburg. The organization is also the leader in research, data, convening and collaborating on issues related to children 0-5 in the Greater Charlotte area.


Position Summary

The Partner Impact Coordinator will implement the contracting and reporting functions for SSMC and its funded programs. The position will adhere to guidelines established by the North Carolina Partnership for Children (NCPC), Division of Child Development & Early Education (DCDEE), Division of Health and Human Services, and other stakeholders. The position will function as a liaison between the SSMC Program and Finance departments to ensure that all details related to satisfactory performance of our local partnership duties are fulfilled.

Salary: $20/hr - $25/hr

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Support the Program Director and Community Investment Committee in preparing the online application program (Blackbaud Grantmaking) to receive annual community applications.
  • Review funding applications for completeness and accuracy.
  • Support Programs to ensure contracts reflect requirements of NCPC and local partnership, and represents all components of Board approved funding request.
  • Support the Program Director to ensure accuracy and legitimacy of data from internal and partner programs.

Data & Reporting

  • Set up and manage the backend of application program system to ensure accurate data collection and completion of review process.
  • Set up interfaces within software for data entry for new partners.
  • Implement security protocols to ensure safe data handling and confidentiality.
  • Set up dashboards and run data reports for various stakeholders.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to new staff on software interfaces.

Collaboration with Finance Department

  • Work with designated Finance staff to ensure consistent and professional communication to all funded partners.
  • Complete necessary paperwork to ensure compliance with all agency and NCPC protocols.
  • Review executed contracts and budgets for accuracy to ensure all funded activity details are included.
  • Support Program and Finance staff with monitoring visits, as needed.

Additional Partnership Support

  • Assist in the preparation of documents to support NCPC annual submission of activities and year-end processes.
  • Support Chief Strategy Officer and other leadership team members with ad hoc data analysis and reports.
  • Assist with additional projects and/or special initiatives as needed.

Education and Experience Required for Position

  • Education and/or Experience: A 4-year degree in business, information technology or computer science from a college or university and two (2) years related experience; or six (6) years equivalent combination of education and/or experience; non-profit experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with modern database and information system technologies, including Apricot and Social Solutions.
  • Data analysis skills, ability to understand how to run queries.
  • Ability to recognize and solve problems and persist when dealing with uncertainty.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, follow-up and plan the workflow.
  • Knowledge of and experience with government contracting and/or accounting procedures, including North Carolina state practices.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse populations.
  • Computer skills that include excellent spreadsheet and database and word processing skills. Ability to use or learn to use Email and Internet/intranet applications.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, government regulations and legal documents. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to answer questions posed by SSMC management, public officials or community groups.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time, non-exempt position, with a high degree of flexibility, including remote work opportunities and flexible work hours throughout the year. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Location & Travel

This position is based in Charlotte, NC with a minor amount of travel. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
